Slab Jacking: Lifting Sunken Concrete Back Into Place

When a concrete slab — a driveway, sidewalk, patio, garage floor, or porch — settles in Central Indiana, the cause is almost always voids or compaction in the clay soil beneath it. Slab jacking, traditionally known as mudjacking, lifts that concrete back into position by pumping a cement-based slurry through small holes drilled in the slab. As the slurry fills the voids and builds pressure, it raises the slab evenly back toward level, then cures into a solid, supportive base.

Slab jacking is a long-proven, cost-effective alternative to tearing out and replacing concrete. Because it reuses your existing slab, it avoids the expense, disruption, and color-mismatch of new pours, and the lifted concrete is usable again quickly. The cement-based material is heavy and durable, which makes it well suited to supporting substantial loads such as driveways and garage floors.

The trade-offs compared with modern polyurethane foam are weight and hole size. Mudjacking slurry is heavier than foam, which can be a consideration on weak soils, and it requires larger injection holes. For many exterior flatwork projects, though, slab jacking remains an economical, reliable way to restore a safe, level surface and eliminate trip hazards.
